Introduction to the OrthoGlide

The OrthoGlide is a truly minimally invasive surgical alternative for some patients with osteoarthritis of the knee.

When conservative treatment fails for a patient, a surgical procedure is frequently recommended. The OrthoGlide is designed to replace much of the function of the cartilage that has been lost due to osteoarthritis in the medial (inner) part of the knee. It is a contoured, disc-shaped device made of cobalt-chrome that is positioned between the two bones of the knee joint. This is done through a small (2-3 inch) incision through the front of the knee. There are no bone cuts, no screws, and no cement required; the unique geometry of the OrthoGlide device keeps it in place.

Following the procedure you are allowed to bear weight, as tolerated, on your knee on the same day as surgery. There is no physical therapy required, but you will have some simple exercises to do at home. The incision will need two weeks to heal and you can slowly return to your activities. When you return to work will depend upon the physical requirements of your occupation and should be discussed with your surgeon.

Candidates for the OrthoGlide are patients with a moderate amount of osteoarthritis in the knee, which is primarily in the medial (inner) half of the knee. The major ligaments of the knee should be intact. Only an orthopedic surgeon trained in the OrthoGlide procedure can determine whether you are a candidate for the OrthoGlide implant.

The OrthoGlide has a particular advantage for the patient who is too young or too active for a total joint. It can delay that time when a total knee replacement may become necessary, such as can happen if the osteoarthritis progresses. As there is no alteration to the bone for the OrthoGlide, future surgical options are still available.
