OrthoGlide® Technical Description
The OrthoGlide Medial Knee Implant is a disc-shaped device made out of cobalt chrome alloy and intended for patients with primarily medial compartment (Grade II-IV) osteoarthritis. The OrthoGlide has special design features that contour to the surface of the tibia; giving stability to the implant within the knee joint. The anterior surface of the OrthoGlide is polished and open, thus providing for a smooth and unconstrained glide path for the femoral condyle. Insertion of the implant involves a minimally invasive surgical procedure that requires no bone cuts and only a small (2-3 inch) incision. The OrthoGlide does not burn any bridges if further, more invasive procedures are needed (i.e. uni-compartmental, total knee replacement). The OrthoGlide is a minimally invasive surgical option for people who have knee pain and do not want a total knee replacement.
Special Features of the OrthoGlide Medial Knee Implant:
- Smooth, unconstrained glide path for the articulation of the femur.
- Engineering design allows the implant to sit on the tibia, ensuring the OrthoGlide maintains proper positioning.
- The specially contoured geometry of the implant allows for front-to-back and side-to-side stability within the knee joint.
With these special features the implant provides a fixed, new surface for the femur to move on; reducing pain associated with the bone-on-bone contact of osteoarthritis.
