| The OrthoGlide Option
Osteoarthritis of the medial compartment of the knee is a common medical condition. Patients with this disease often to seek remedies to relieve pain and restore function of the affected knee. As the condition advances in severity, the non-surgical treatments often give way to unicompartmental or total knee replacement procedures. An alternative to total or partial knee replacement surgery for some patients is a minimally invasive procedure to implant a metallic device in the medial knee compartment.
ABS has developed a minimally invasive implant, the OrthoGlide, which is a unique and innovative design composed of cobalt-chrome alloy. The implant functions to replace the functionality of the cartilage that has been lost due to osteoarthritis. The implants unique engineering provides positional stability without the use of rigid fixation methods or the removal of bone. In addition, the specially contoured geometry of the implant provides an open glide path, allowing for the unconstrained motion of the femoral condyle.
The OrthoGlide may be used in many cases in place of significantly more invasive total knee replacement surgery. The OrthoGlide has received US, European and Canadian regulatory clearance.
